Arcfield Canada selected to participate in
Canadian CUAS Sandbox 2024

Calgary, Alberta, June 25, 2024
– Arcfield Canada, in partnership with Fortem Technologies, successfully participated in the 2024 Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems (CUAS) Sandbox. The event took place at CFB Suffield, Alberta, from May 27 to June 21.

Organized by the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)’s Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program, the 2024 CUAS Sandbox was a collaborative effort with defence and security partners, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Public Safety Canada.

This year's event focused on advanced CUAS solutions that can detect and/or defeat Micro and Mini Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) with systems that can be integrated into the broader military command and control system.

The rapid increase in the malicious use of UAS systems necessitates advanced solutions. Adversaries continuously refine UAS designs to evade current CUAS capabilities (by reducing the UAS visibility, minimizing radio-frequency emissions, and increasing autonomy), making traditional approaches increasingly ineffective. The 2024 Sandbox provided a platform for participants to demonstrate innovative solutions that address these evolving threats, mitigating technology that anticipates future UAS and CUAS developments.

Arcfield Canada and Fortem Technologies presented a comprehensive, layered, detect-and-defeat CUAS system during the event. Their solution integrates RF, optical, and radar detection, advanced AI-driven Command and Control, and both hard kill and soft kill defeat options. This versatile system can function in fixed, mobile, and portable configurations, offering robust protection against drone threats.

The IDEaS program invests in cutting-edge research and technology to meet global defence and security challenges. Since its inception in April 2018, the program has fostered Canadian innovation, transforming creative concepts into tangible solutions for the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF).
